Annecy 2021: Swiss animation films at the hybrid festival edition

14.06.2021

A total of nine animation films from Switzerland have been invited to Annecy, including two world premieres and eight films screened in competition. This year’s 60th edition of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival (June 14-19, 2021), as well as the Mifa Film Market, will take place in a hybrid format on-site and online.

Marcel Barelli’s film DANS LA NATURE (Nadasdy Film) will celebrate its world premiere in the Short Film Competition “L’officielle”. In bold colours, he demonstrates that homosexuality is not just a human story. Screened in the same section will be Georges Schwizgebel’s DARWIN’S NOTEBOOK (Studio GDS), which won the Swiss Film Award for Best Animation Film, as well as PEEL by Samuel Patthey and Silvain Monney (DOK MOBILE), with pencil-drawn sketches observing everyday life in a retirement home. The world premiere of SWEET NOTHING by Marie Kenov and Joana Fischer, which was produced in the Animation Department at HSLU, will be celebrated with a screening in the Graduation Short Films Competition: a whimsically drawn summer idyll abruptly interrupted by an intrusive lawn mower.

Nadasdy Film talent pool

The Swiss production company Nadasdy Film, which specialises in animation films, is presenting a total of five films at this year’s festival edition. In addition to the Swiss productions DANS LA NATURE and BEMOL by Oana Lacroix screened in the Young Audiences Short Films Competition, there are also the French-Swiss coproductions KIKO ET LES ANIMAUX by Yawen Zheng (Short Films Competition), UN CAILLOU DANS LA CHAUSSURE by Eric Montchaud (Young Audiences Short Films Competition) and VANILLE by Guillaume Lorin (TV Film Competition).

Dirk Koy’s experimental video clip OUT OF SIGHT to music by Yello will be screened in the special programme WTF2021 – Midnight Specials. Swiss animation filmmaker Maja Gehrig (AVERAGE HAPPINESS) is a jury member of the Contrechamp Feature Films section. Character designer Félicie Haymoz will participate in the “Dressed Up and As Animated As Ever!” panel on the relationship between animation and fashion.
