Swiss films gain record market share

16.01.2026

Swiss films generated ticket sales of approximately one million in Swiss cinemas in 2025, reaching their highest market share in almost two decades. Despite an overall decline in the cinema market, nearly one in ten cinema visits was for a domestic production, as figures from ProCinema show.

Swiss cinema continued its positive development in 2025. With 908,000 admissions, it recorded a market share of 9.2%, which represents an increase of 2.1% over the previous year. The last time a higher market share was recorded was in 2020, when it was exceptionally high during the pandemic. At that time, however, numerous major international productions were missing due to cinema closures and postponements. The current success is therefore particularly remarkable as it was attained under normal market conditions.

As early as July 2025, the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) reported a record half-year for Swiss film productions. In the first half of the year, Swiss productions reached a historic market share of 12.3 per cent. The latest figures from ProCinema, the umbrella organisation of Swiss cinema and film distribution companies, confirm this positive trend for the entire cinema year to date.

The strong Swiss cinema figures in the domestic market reflect an internationally successful year at major festivals. An overview can be found in the annual review by SWISS FILMS.

Several Swiss films in the top 50

The overall success of domestic filmmaking can be attributed to several films: Petra Volpe’s HELDIN was released in February and became the most successful Swiss film of the year with 202,509 cinema admissions. Aside from HELDIN, a total of six Swiss productions made it into the top 50 most-watched films: DOWNHILL SKIERS, I’M NOT STILLER, GAME OVER – THE FALL OF CREDIT SUISSE and FRIEDA’S CASE were among the top 50 with significant ticket sales. HELLO BETTY had a strong cinema release in autumn 2025 and had already attracted 114,558 viewers by the end of the year and it is still showing in cinemas.

Overall market decline

At the same time, however, the market situation remains challenging. According to ProCinema, Swiss cinemas recorded a total of roughly 7% fewer admissions in 2025. The decline is mainly due to a reduced offering of US mainstream films compared to the previous year. The range of films on offer particularly in the blockbuster sector was significantly lower than in previous years, which is largely due to the strikes in Hollywood.

Against this backdrop, the strong market share held by Swiss films is becoming even more impressive. In an overall declining market environment, they were able to expand their presence and reach a wide audience. Despite their current success, however, market shares remain volatile, as external factors could continue to have a significant impact on the cinema market in the future.

Streaming: increasing demand

The performance of Swiss productions in streaming over the past year has not yet been evaluated. FSO data for 2024 show that Swiss film productions continue to be a niche in streaming offerings, with viewership increasing significantly over the past five years. Due to the growing demand, there is still further potential for Swiss productions to have a stronger presence on the platforms.

Dometic marketing campaign

Domestically, SWISS FILMS is strengthening the visibility of Swiss films with new marketing activities. In 2025, six marketing campaigns were specifically supported by the Campaign Booster, a new instrument for promoting films with strong audience potential in the domestic market. These measures are complemented by national marketing collaborations that SWISS FILMS is establishing together with partners from the media and advertising market.
