Sony Pictures Classics launches “Vitus” in North America

The film “Vitus” by Fredi M. Murer, which was selected by Switzerland to participate in the 2007 Oscar nominations, will be launched in the United States and Canada by the distribution company Sony Pictures Classics. After having been picked up for distribution in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, the prodigy drama will now be represented on this fourth continent as well. “Vitus” is also in the running for a nomination at the 64th Golden Globe Awards, which will be bestowed by the Foreign Press Association in Hollywood on January 15, 2007. A special screening for approximately 80 accredited foreign journalists and members of the association will take place on December 1, 2006.
The Hollywood company Sony Pictures Classics is known for its distribution of studio films both at home and abroad. In addition to US films, it is currently managing the US distribution of “Volver/To Return” by Pedro Almodovar and “Das Leben der Anderen/The Lives of Others” by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. The contract with Sony Pictures Classics was negotiated following the AFI Film Fest in Los Angeles, where “Vitus” won the audience award. Since its premiere at the Berlinale, the world distribution company Media Luna Entertainment (Cologne) has sold the film to distributors from 30 countries and territories, among them Primer Plano (Argentina), Circuito Cinearte (Brazil), IFD (Belgium), Cineplex (Belize, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Honduras, Columbia, Nicaragua, Panama, San Salvador), Hansion Media (China), Schwarz-Weiss (Germany), Océan Films (France), Nachshon Films (Israel), Tokyo Theatres (Japan), CNS Entertainment (Korea), IFD (Luxembourg), Quality Films (Mexico), and Filmladen (Austria).
