The documentary film “Asshak – Tales from the Sahara” by Ulrike Koch (Production: Catpics, Zurich) is one of thirteen films competing for the 10,000 Euro VPRO Tiger Award which is to be given at the 33rd International Film Festival Rotterdam (January 21 – February 1, 2004). The selection of additional Swiss films in several side categories and an introductory program by the Lausanne Film School ECAL complete the strong presence of Swiss filmmaking at this festival, a venue particularly tailored for arthouse distribution.
In the series “Exploding Cinema: Power: Play”, “Des épaules solides” (Strong Shoulders) by Ursula Meier will be shown, a film also nominated for the Swiss Film Prize. In the program “Irreversible”, the medium-length feature “Genève-Marseille” by Frédéric Choffat will be screened. “Ce jour-là” (That Day), the “helvetic” film by Raul Ruiz (Production, Light Night, Geneva) will be shown as part of a retrospective on the renowned Chilean master. In addition, the following films by Swiss filmmakers will be seen at the festival: “Paper Route“ (Robert Frank, a Swiss-Canadian co-production), “Toccata“ (Hannes Schüpbach), and “Der geringste Widerstand“ (Peter Fischli).

The Ecole Cantonale D’Art de Lausanne (ECAL) will be promoting its program by presenting 10 shorts produced by young directors and faculty members Lionel Baier and Pierre Wyssa. For the last time, Simon Field will be the co-director of the Rotterdam Film Festival before Sandra den Hamer will take over as the director in 2005.
