Portugal’s most important short film festival – “Curtas” Vila do Conde – will present a programme comprised of six films, all of which were made by female directors. In addition, the filmmaker Basil Da Cunha will present his feature-film debut “Até ver a luz,” and Georges Schwizgebel is a jury member and will hold a masterclass.

The 21st Festival “Curtas” Vila do Conde in Portugal (July 6-14, 2013) has organised several supporting programmes, including a short film highlight focusing on “Switzerland from the female point of view,” in collaboration with SWISS FILMS, the promotion agency.

A Suiça no feminino programme (Swiss Girls on the Rocks!)
The six works screened in this programme include four fiction films and two documentary films from 2012. Presented under the Portuguese title of “A Suiça no feminino,” the audience and film professionals in Vila do Conde will have the opportunity to discover the following short fiction films: “Girl And Boy On The Rocks!” by Maria Sigrist; “Mila” by Kristina Wagenbauer; “Coup de soleil” by Natalia Ducrey; and “Man kann nicht alles…” by Marie-Elsa Sgualdo. The documentary films include “Baggern” by Corina Schwingruber Ilic and “Nés derrière les pierres” by Carina Freire. The director of the latter film, born in Lausanne and of Portuguese descent, will accompany the screening of this programme in Vila do Conde, thanks to support by SWISS FILMS.

Basil Da Cunha: from shorts to a feature
The young Swiss-Portuguese filmmaker, who was honoured with the award for Best Film in the Portuguese Competition of the Festival “Curtas” Vila do Conde for his short films “À côté” (2009) and “Os vivos tambem choram” (2012) in 2010 and 2012, will now personally present his first feature-length fiction film “Até ver a luz.” The film, which celebrated its world premiere in the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes last May, will now celebrate its Portuguese premiere in the From Shorts to Features section.

Five Swiss films in competition
Two short documentary films – “Quod Erat Demonstrandum,” by Fabrice Aragno and about Jean-Luc Godard as well as “Steher” by Adrian Winkler – will be screened in the International Competition at the festival. Three animation films will compete in the “Curtinhas” section (Children’s Film Competition): “The Kiosk” by Anete Melece; “The Smortlybacks” by Ted Sieger and Wouter Dierickx; and the “Flapper & Friends” series by Krzysztof Brzozowski and Jacek Lechtanski, a Polish-Swiss coproduction (artistic director is Luc Toutounghi).

Masterclass by jury member Georges Schwizgebel
The master of animation, Georges Schwizgebel, who was present at the first edition of the festival in 1993 with his film “La course à l’abîme” (1992), returns to Vila do Conde twenty years later as a jury member for the International Competition. In addition, on July 10, he will hold a masterclass on his films, acclaimed at festivals around the world.
