De retour au Japon pour affaires, Masahiro persuade Sandra, son épouse allemande réticente, de commencer une nouvelle vie avec lui. Très vite, il est hanté par des rêves inquiétants et finit par se convaincre qu’il était un samouraï violent dans une vie antérieure. Une légende mystérieuse concernant une tombe cachée dans la forêt d'Aokigahara lui promet de soulager sa culpabilité grandissante. Déterminé à la trouver, il emmène Sandra en expédition dans la forêt – mais lorsqu'un incident mettant leur vie en danger les oblige à rebrousser chemin, Masahiro est confronté à un traumatisme d'enfance longtemps refoulé qui révèle la véritable source de son tourment. Le film mêle drame psychologique et séquences oniriques animées inspirées de l'anime.
