Liouba, die in Südrussland lebte, ist mit ihren neun Kindern vor ihrem gewalttätigen Mann geflüchtet. Sie lebt nun im Norden des Landes, in einem russischen Dorf. Mit der Unterstützung ihrer ältesten Tochter Alesia zieht sie ihre Kinder allein auf. Die beiden Frauen arbeiten auf dem Bauernhof, und ihre ganze Liebe gilt ihren Kindern. Vom Mutterinstinkt getrieben, nehmen sie ein zehntes Kind, den dreijährigen Sacha, in ihre Obhut. Weil Sacha sich selbst überlassen ist, seit ihn seine Mutter verstossen hat, und weil Liouba zu den Menschen gehört, die sich in Liebe aufopfern.
