Barbara Simmen is top of her class but further schooling is not an option. It is the year 1840. She works fourteen hours a day at the local textile factory and becomes pregnant. As a single mother, she has no prospects in Glarus and emigration is her way out and becomes her fate – as it was for many Swiss in a time not so long ago.
