The site of Belle-Idée houses the psychiatric units of Geneva’s university hospitals. It has no fence, but is rather a property open to all, underscoring the prevailing ambition: a psychiatric clinic that no longer confines but rather seeks a dialogue with the city. However, the hospital quickly transformed itself into a refuge for the patients staying there. The “outside” is hostile: isolation, lack of accommodation, chaotic family situations, the impossibility of employment. To avoid relapses, leaving the hospital requires preparation, a complex process that can take many weeks.
