This film is the result of a long period of observation and study during the 10 days of the Prix de Lausanne 1999, an international competition for young dancers. Exclusively reserved for classical ballet since its founding in 1973, the Prix de Lausanne has this year widened its horizons to contemporary dance. It has at the same time put more emphasis on the pedagogical aspect of the competition. The main purpose of this documentary film is to explore some of the many possible approaches when it comes to training dancers. It also explores the subtle ways in which a relationship grows between teacher and pupils, and the relations that develop between those competing for the prize. Incorporating footage from dance classes, interviews, and discussions with choreographers, the film introduces us to the world of dance, some of its personalities and their views. It provides insights into the training of professional dancers, and the art of communicating not just the skills required but the passion needed to bring them to life.
