Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860-1904) is the world's most performed playwright after Shakespeare. A Russian doctor and writer, he was 44 years old when, in July 1904, he uttered “Ich sterbe (I am dying)” with his last breath in German. From Moscow to Badenweiler in southern Germany, the film questions these final words and puts the author's brief and altruistic existence into perspective with our own finitude.
