Swiss animation in the spotlight at the world’s largest animation film festival

The Annecy International Animation Film Festival will present the largest focus ever devoted to Swiss animated film from June 13-18, 2022. A total of 15 films will be compete in various sections of the festival’s official programmes. In addition, fourteen special programmes will showcase the last 100 years of Swiss animation filmmaking. SWISS FILMS will be present with a booth at the film market in Annecy. Furthermore, numerous filmmakers from Switzerland will accompany their films to the festival, participate as jury members or take part in some of the many industry events.

Fourteen new animated short films from Switzerland will be screened in the festival’s Official Selection: LUCKY MAN by Claude Luyet, MIRACASAS by Raphaëlle Stolz, THE INVENTION OF LESS by Noah Erni and THE RECORD by Jonathan Laskar in the official Short Film Competition. The experimental short films ARREST IN FLIGHT by Adrian Flury and INTERSECT by Dirk Koy will be screened in the Off-Limits Short Film Competition.


Of foxes, pigeons and hedgehogs

Marina Rosset’s THE QUEEN OF THE FOXES and PAOLO’S HAPPINESS by Thorsten Drössler and Manuel Schroeder will be screened in the Young Audiences Short Films Competition, in the Graduation Short Films Competition BODDYSSEY by Jonas Alexander Bienz, MOSAIC by Eleonora Berra, MANCHMAL WEISS ICH NICHT WO DIE SONNE by Samantha Aquilino as well as BAFTA winner DO NOT FEED THE PIGEONS by Swiss director Antonin Niclass. Competing in Perspectives Short Films will be IDODO by Ursula Ulmi, as well as GIUSEPPE, Isabelle Favez’s latest film about the titular hedgehog, in TV Films.

Feature-length animation films

The French-Swiss-Italian anidoc NO DOGS OR ITALIANS ALLOWED (director: Alain Ughetto; Swiss coproduction: Nadasdy Film), an autobiographically tinged portray about Italian migration, has been selected for screening in the Feature Films Competition. The Swiss-French feature film RED JUNGLE by Juan José Lozano and Zoltán Horváth (Swiss production: Intermezzo Film, Nadasdy Films) about a leader of the FARC rebels in Columbia will celebrate its French premiere in the Special Screenings section. The medium-length Swiss-French coproduction SUR LE PONT by Samuel and Frédéric Guillaume will also celebrate its premiere in the Special Screenings.

Swiss animation tribute

The 14 special programmes comprising the Swiss Animation Tribute take a journey through the history of Swiss animation filmmaking. They include a historical programme curated by Cinémathèque Suisse, as well as three retrospectives featuring films by Claude Barras, Isabelle Favez and Marcel Barelli.


Major Schweizer presence at MIFA film market

SWISS FILMS will be present at the film market with a large booth, providing a platform for Swiss animation filmmaking. Swiss filmmakers, industry representatives and animation talents will participate in the numerous marketing events in Annecy.

The two digital experience projects AMAZING MONSTER by Raphael PENASA and SUNSET MOTEL by Gilles JOBIN have been invited to participate in the Mifa Pitches. The Geneva International Film Festival GIFF will present four XR projects in the SWISSXRLAND: FORÊTS by Fabienne Giezendanner; ROBOT + PAPILLON by Raphael Penasa, Allison Crank, Jonathan Droz; THE TRUE FILM by Christina Zimmermann, Susanne Guggenberger; and PEACE UNTOLD by Robin Burgauer, Robbert van Rooden. Animation filmmaker Samuel Patthey, whose film ÉCORCE was honoured last year in Annecy with the “Cristal du court métrage”, is a guest at the Mifa Campus.

Rounding off the extensive Swiss focus are the Soirée Suisse, at the invitation of the Swiss Consulate General in Lyon, as well as numerous fringe events and exhibitions.
