Cannes 2026
Diversity in Swiss filmmaking, talent in the spotlight
29.04.2026
A total of six feature films and documentaries, hybrid formats and short films will showcase the diversity of formats and stories of Swiss filmmaking on the Croisette. Two films will celebrate their premiere in the Official Selection and four others in prestigious parallel sections. A number of Swiss talents from production, film music, screenwriting and directing will take part in the Marché du Film’s industry programmes.
Celebrating its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section of the Official Selection will be the German-Swiss coproduction I’LL BE GONE IN JUNE by German director Katharina Rivilis. This feature film debut about a German exchange student in New Mexico is set in the aftermath of 9/11 and fuses elements of a road movie with a coming-of-age story. The film was produced by Wim Wenders, among others. On board from Switzerland as coproducer is 8horses (Olga Lamontanara, Simon Jaquemet).
Screened in the ACID CANNES section will be the hybrid film SUMMER DRIFT (VIRAGES) by Céline Carridroit and Aline Suter, who also co-wrote the screenplay. The film is a production by Geneva-based Cavale Films (Aurélien Marsais, Cécile Lestrade) together with Alter Ego Production in France. In their “documentary comedy”, the directors portray Johanna, who works on the assembly line at a luxury watch manufacturer in Geneva. Because she cannot afford a summer holiday, she decides to repair her beloved vintage VW Beetle and compete in Europe’s largest Beetle meet.
Celebrating its world premiere in the Quinzaine des Cinéastes will be the French-German-Swiss documentary film GABIN. French director Maxence Voiseux accompanied Gabin in northern France from the age of 8 to 18. As the youngest of the Jourdel family, he is expected to take over his father’s butcher’s shop. But torn between family loyalty and a desire to break free, he has other dreams. The film was coproduced by Geneva-based Rita Productions (Palmyre Badinier).
Celebrating its world premiere in the Semaine de la Critique will be the feature film DUA by Kosovar director Blerta Basholli, whose award-winning debut film HIVE was screened at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. The film is set in Pristina in the late 1990s: as war looms and ethnic tensions escalate, 13-year-old Dua struggles to find her place amongst her peers and come to terms with her changing body. The film was produced by Geneva-based Alva Film (Britta Rindelaub, Thomas Reichlin) in collaboration with France and Kosovo. Producer Thomas Reichlin participated as a Producer on the Move for European Film Promotion in Cannes last year.
Two Swiss short films
Also selected for the Semaine de la Critique is the documentary short film I THINK YOU SHOULD BE HERE by Anna-Marija Adomaitytė and Elie Grappe, produced by Bande à part Films (Lionel Baier, Jaber Debzi). The film revolves around seven girls near Geneva on the cusp of adulthood. A collective, intimate and paradoxical memory of youth spent on social media, searching for connection and identity.
La Cinef forms part of the Official Selection and focuses on films from film schools and emerging talent. Representing Switzerland is the short film ALWAYS WANTED TO BE GOD, NEVER WANTED TO DO GOOD by Noa Epars and Marvin Merkel from HEAD – Genève.
Further films either by or featuring Swiss talent
Two talented Swiss directors will be presenting their latest films as French productions in Cannes: the feature film L’AFFAIRE MARIE-CLAIRE by Yvo Muller, co-directed with Lauriane Escaffre, starring Charlotte Gainsbourg and Cécile de France, will be presented in the Special Screenings.
Sarah Arnold’s feature film debut L’ESPÈCE EXPLOSIVE (TOO MANY BEASTS), starring Swiss actress Ella Rumpf in a leading role, has been selected for the Quinzaine des Cinéastes.
Bruno Dumont’s film RED ROCKS, coproduced by Dan Wechsler at Bord Cadre films, will also be screened in the Quinzaine des Cinéastes.
Fostering world-class talent
Every year, European Film Promotion (EFP) selects 20 up-and-coming European producers for its Producers on the Move talent programme, which takes place during the Cannes Film Festival. Upon recommendation of SWISS FILMS, Swiss producer Michela Pini (Cinédokké, Turnus Film) is taking part this year. She is currently working on numerous new projects, including IL DOMINIO by Klaudia Reynicke, BASTARDO by Villi Herrman and IBICABA – DAS PARADIES IN DEN KÖPFEN by Andrea Štaka.
Swiss film composer Mirjam Skal is one of ten international composers selected to take part in Marché du Film’s renowned Spot the Composer programme, which offers the ten composers the opportunity to showcase their talent and meet producers and directors seeking original scores for their projects.
Producer Fabiana Seitz (rumor filmkollektiv) will participate in the New Producers Room. As part of the SFC | Rendez-vous Industry short film platform, this training programme enables ten promising short film producers to discuss their projects and forge international contacts for coproductions.
The Focus SCRIPT talent programme is for film school graduates, aiming to support them in developing their first professional short film production. Director Matthias Joulaud, graduate of HEAD – Genève, will present his film project LE DERNIER AFFÛT (THE LAST HIDE).
Laura Weibel and Aimée Lavignac will take part in the Short Film Corner’s Writing Hub with their short film project GABRIEL, GABRIEL.
