Two of the competition entries at the Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica were coproduced by Ventura Film in Ticino. Two further films from Switzerland will celebrate their world premieres in the Short Film Competition and in the Critics’ Week in Venice. The cinematographer Renato Berta is a member of the international jury; he was the director of photography for the film classic “Il bacio di Tosca,” which will also be screened at the festival. SWISS FILMS, the promotion agency, has provided support for the Swiss presence in Venice.

The 70th Venice International Film Festival (August 28 - September 7, 2013) will present four Swiss productions in the festival programme, two of which were coproduced by Ventura Film and will be screened in competition: the Italian-Swiss-French coproduction “Via Castellana Bandiera” by Italian director Emma Dante about a silent duel between two women; and the drama “Die Frau des Polizisten” by German director Philip Gröning about a young couple living in a small town with their four-year-old daughter.

Widespread recognition for Ticino’s Ventura Film
The Ticinese producers of the two competition entries, Elsa Guidinetti and Andres Pfäffli (Ventura Film, Meride), were recently honoured with the Premio Cinema Ticino at the film festival in Locarno. An article in Screen International included: “… ventura film has focused on projects exploring and crossing new boundaries such as Michelangelo Frammartino’s ‘Le quattro volte’, Jennifer Fox’s ‘My Reincarnation’ … .”

Short film “Death For A Unicorn” in competition
Another production from Italian-speaking Switzerland is “Death For A Unicorn.” The co-directors of the film, Riccardo Bernasconi and Francesca Reverdito, will personally present their 15-minute fiction film, with voice-over spoken by Tilda Swinton, in the “Orizzonti” section of the Short Film Competition.

“Il bacio di Tosca” classic with Renato Berta as cinematographer
Film producer Marcel Hoehn (T&C-Films, Zurich) will present Daniel Schmid’s documentary film from the 1980s “Il bacio di Tosca” in the Venice Classics section. The film was restored by Cinémathèque Suisse. Cinematographer Renato Berta (Godard, Tanner, Schmid, Malle, Resnais, among others) are members of the international jury, presided over by Bernardo Bertolucci.

Rita Productions in the Critics’ Week
Film producer Pauline Gygax (Rita Productions, Geneva) has been invited to the 28th International Critics’ Week with the French-Swiss coproduction “L’Armée du Salut” (director: D’Abdellah Taïa). The film tells the dramatic story about a young homosexual Moroccan. Another coproduction by Rita Productions “Les grandes ondes (à l'ouest)” was recently screened on the Piazza Grande at the film festival in Locarno.
