Fifty-nine archival photographs that were shot in Palestine show appropriating gazes cast upon the so-called Holy Land. At the same time, the images from the Frank Scholten collection depict scenes of Palestinian life in the 1920s, preserving what is continually threatened with erasure, expulsion, oppression and denial. The filmmaker decides to be present in the video essay herself while handling the negatives and reciting the voice-over. By inverting the video footage – and thereby turning the negatives into positives – the video essay deals with notions of power and the gaze. It thereby emphasises that we are not mere spectators; everyone is involved in imperialist projects that continue to intersect in Palestine.
