SWISS FILMS @ Cannes Film Festival

10.05.2023

With support from SWISS FILMS, a total of six Swiss film producers will take part in various industry events at the Marché du Film (May 16-24, 2023), one of the largest film markets in the world. Three new titles have been added since the three Swiss productions celebrating their world premieres were announced last month.

In addition to LA CHIMERA, a second Swiss coproduction will be presented as a Special Screening in the Official Selection: MARGUERITE’S THEOREM by French director Anna Novion. The film was coproduced by Beauvoir Films (Aline Schmid, Adrian Blaser) and RTS. Swiss actress Ella Rumpf stars in the leading role as a brilliant mathematics student.

Two other films with Swiss participation will celebrate their premieres in the Official Selection: PERDIDOS EN LA NOCHE by Amat Escalante (Mexico) and EUREKA by Lisandro Alonso (Argentina), both of which producer Dan Wechsler at Bord Cadres films in Geneva took part in.

The Swiss films screened in the parallel sections have received prominent exposure: the ACID section will open with the Swiss feature film LAISSEZ-MOI by Maxime Rappaz; BLACKBIRD BLACKBIRD BLACKBERRY by Elene Naveriani has been selected as the closing film of the Quinzaine de Cinéastes.

Two films in Cannes Classics

Cannes Classics will pay tribute to Swiss-French director Jean-Luc Godard, who passed last year, with three films, including the world premiere of Godard’s 20-minute “Trailer of the film that will never exist: PHONY WARS”. Godard’s long-time collaborator Fabrice Aragno will attend the screening. The Swiss coproducer is L’Atelier.

The Cinémathèque Suisse will present the world premiere of the digitally restored Swiss film THE VILLAGE by Leopold Lindtberg, in attendance of Cinémathèque director Frédéric Maire. The film was produced by Praesens Films in 1953.

Networking for Swiss producers

With the support from SWISS FILMS, four Swiss producers will take part in the Producers’ Networks events and workshops at the Marché du Film, where they have the opportunity to network with international coproducers regarding their new projects: Nicola Bernasconi (Rough Cat); Katia Monla (Intermezzo Films); Peter Luisi (Spotlight Media Productions) and Michela Pini (Amka Films Productions, Cinédokké, 8horses). Pini is also the coproducer of LA CHIMERA and will present Simon Jaquemet’s new film ELECTRIC CHILD as a work-in-progress for the Frontières platform as the film’s producer.

Upon recommendation of SWISS FILMS, producer Mark Olexa (Dok Mobile) and producer Sophia Rubischung (Dschoint Ventschr) will participate in the New Producers’ Room talent programme of the Cannes Short Film Corner, which offers a platform for short film coproductions.

OS BEATOS is Valentin Lebeau’s short film project at the HEAD Film School in Geneva. The project is selected for the Focus Script talent programme, a collaboration of SFC | Rendez-vous Industry with selected film schools.

SWISS FILMS in the Village International

The promotion agency SWISS FILMS will be present at the Marché du Film Cannes with its Pavillon suisse in the Village international, offering it as a central hub for meetings and events to numerous Swiss industry players, for example, for the Locarno Film Festival or the Festival Visions du Réel.
