Geboren 1970 in Suhr, Schweiz. Schweizerische und italienische Staatsbürgerschaft. 1992-94 Kunststudentin in Zürich. 1994-95 Aufenthalt in New York. 1995-97 AVID-Cutterin in Zürich. 1997-2001 Dramaturgie- und Drehbuchstudium an der HFF (Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen) Konrad Wolf in Potsdam. Seit 2001 Freischaffende Drehbuchautorin und Regisseurin. 2017 Schweizer Filmpreis «Bestes Drehbuch» mit ihrem Film DIE GÖTTLICHE ORDNUNG. Volpe schrieb zudem das Drehbuch zum Film HEIDI von Alain Gsponer, der weltweit über 3,5 Millionen Kinoeintritte verzeichnet, sowie das Drehbuch zur erfolgreichen SRF-Serie FRIEDEN. Neben ihren Schweizer Projekten ist sie als Autorin und Regisseurin in den USA u.a. für Fox Searchlight und Disney tätig. Zurzeit arbeitet sie mit den beiden US-Schauspielgrössen Laurence Fishburne und Clifton Collins Jr. am Gefängnis-Drama FRANK & LOUIS. Petra Volpe lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und New York.
