Silvio Soldini
Director, Screenwriter, Cinematographer
Born in 1958 in Milan, Italy. Swiss and Italian citizenship. 1980-81 studied film at New York University. In 1983 he made his first medium-length film LANDSCAPE WITH FIGURES, which together with GIULIA IN OTTOBRE won awards at various national and international festivals. His first feature film, L'ARIA SERENA DELL'OVEST, was released in 1990 and was a great success in audiences. It was shown in competition at the Locarno Film Festival, won the Grand Prix at the Annecy Festival and was invited to numerous international festivals (Montreal, Rotterdam, "New Directors New Films" at the Moma in New York). UN'ANIMA DIVISA IN DUE (1993) screened in competition at the Venice Film Festival. LE ACROBATE (1997) was in competition at the Locarno Festival and the San Francisco International Film Festival, and was awarded at the Rencontres Internationales Paris and the Grolla d'Oro for Valeria Golino. PANE E TULIPANI (Bread and Tulips) (2000) also helped him break through internationally thanks to its great success among critics and audiences. The film was sold all over the world - from Japan to Australia - and was a great success in Switzerland (second highest box office ever), Germany, Argentina, Brazil and the United States. BRUCIO NEL VENTO (Burning in the Wind) (2002) screened in competition at the Berlinale and received eight David di Donatello nominations.
