À quinze ans, Max part à Saint-Hilare, où il espère trouver son père, le fameux Johnny Bigoude, disparu quelque temps avant sa naissance. En chemin, il rencontre Sam, un forain fantasque et roublard, qui s'y rend lui aussi pour assister à la fête de la tapette à mouches. Saint-Hilare est le fief de Bzzz & Co, célèbre fabrique de tapettes à mouches, dirigée par Rodolfo, un héritier très fin de race. Max deviendra l’idole de Félicie, une gamine délurée, et le protégé de Madame Doudou la vieille institutrice du village qui convaincra Rodolfo de l’engager comme musicien d’ascenseur.
